We operate four in-house optical labs, spanning 2000 sq feet. We use very sophisticated, computerized, lens edging equipment:

1. MEI EASYFit TREND Lens Edger from Italy: It “edges” (custom-shapes) eyeglass lenses to fit any frame, But that’s just the beginning! The MEI EasyFit Trend features an automated Total Quality Control (TQC) system. After edging the lens, its built-in instruments automatically check the following optical parameters before releasing the lens to the lab technician:
Lens Power: Ensures the lens matches the prescription.
Centering: Verifies the optical center is perfectly aligned.
Size: Checks the physical dimensions of the lens to ensure a perfect fit in the frame.
Axis: Validates the correct orientation of the cylinder and axis for astigmatism.

What if our lab gets really busy?
When our lab gets busy, we have two patternless automatic lens edgers:
One is a NATIONAL OPTRONICS 7E Patternless Edger. The other is a Satisloh ES-versa.


2. Visionix Briot Scan 8 Frame Tracer: The Briot Scan 8 is an automated mapping machine used in optical labs to capture the exact shape and size of your eyeglass frames. It acts as a digital tailor, using a tiny probe to trace the inside groove of a frame so an automated cutter can create a perfectly fitting lens.

The Probe: A tiny, mechanical "stylus" gently glides along the inner groove of the empty eyeglass frame.
The 3D Map: As it glides, the machine records hundreds of measurements to map out the frame's width, height, curvature (base curve), and depth.
The Digital Blueprint: It converts these physical measurements into a highly accurate 3D digital file.
Cutting: This digital file is then sent to an automated lens cutter (MEI EasyFIt Trend edger) that shapes the actual glass or plastic lens so it snaps into the frame perfectly.
If lenses are cut by pure guesswork, they will either pop out if too small, or crack the frame if too large. The Briot Scan 8 ensures that your prescription lenses fit snugly and safely, giving you distortion-free vision and preventing fitting errors.

3. AIR COMPRESSOR: Igersoll-Rand UP6-15CTAS-150psg. An Ingersoll Rand air compressor works by pulling in regular outdoor air, squishing it into a much smaller space, and storing it at high pressure. Think of it like a giant, heavy-duty bicycle pump. When we need power, this stored, pressurized air is released to run the MEI EASYFit TREND Lens Edger.
Our in-house optical lab keeps an average daily inventory of 10,000 single-vision eyeglass lenses on hand, with a range of:
Sphere: +2.00 to -6.00, Cylinder: Up to -3.00
With that much inventory, it’s very likely that we have your single-vision lenses in stock. However, our opticians will verify this for you.
Bifocals and Progressive lenses are not single-vision, and are not available by Express Service.
Our in-house optical lab stocks the following types of single-vision lenses on a typical day:
Plastic Lenses with Anti-Reflective Coating
Plastic Lenses without Anti-Reflective Coating
Poly (Polycarbonate) Lenses with Anti-Reflective Coating: Thinner, lighter, and more impact-resistant than plastic lenses.
Poly (Polycarbonate) Lenses without Anti-Reflective Coating: Thinner, lighter, and more impact-resistant than plastic lenses.
Transitions Lenses: Automatically darken outdoors and lighten indoors.
Tech Shield Blue UV Lenses: Filters 400–455 nm wavelengths from digital screens and cuts glare.
With this much inventory, our patients can rest assured that they will have a choice of lens materials.
If your single-vision prescription is out of range of our stock lenses, we can usually make your lenses on our Digital Freeform Lens Generator, Satisloh model “VFT-macro”. This machine, made in Germany, will take a raw plastic block and mill, grind, and shape it into a lens with your specific prescription in it. This process may take up to two additional hours, so please be aware that your glasses will not be ready in one hour.
And as a reminder, insurance plans are excluded due to contracted lab agreements. In other words, this type of in-house lens work must be paid out-of-pocket.
First, a lens blank will be selected by our lab technician. A lens blank is a raw, unfinished piece of optical material—typically shaped like a disk or block made of plastic or polycarbonate—that is ground and polished down to create a finished optical or prescription lens.
STEP 1: The lens blank will be blocked using a Satisloh Layout Blocker-PRA.

STEP 2: The lens blank will be placed into the Satisloh VFT-macro Digital Freeform Lens Generator. This machine can perform all of the following tasks:
Milling: High-speed cutters trim the raw lens size and shape.
Grinding: Diamond-tipped tools grind the back surface to fix vision or focus.
Shaping: Sets the precise curves needed for a specific user.

STEP 3: After milling, grinding, and shaping your lens, the lens will be polished on our Satisloh Toro-Flex Lens Polisher.

STEP 4: Finally, your lenses will be edged on our MEI EASYFit TREND edger, shown at the top of this blog.
